  • Glow-in-the-dark shellLeave it under a lamp or a window for ten minutes and the whole body carries a green afterglow long enough for a full run down a dark corridor.
  • Same climb, different nerveSuction and drive are unchanged from our standard crawler — smooth paint, tile and glass — but in the dark you only see the shape, never the wall.
  • Remote reaches across the roomAll directions on one simple remote, good for about 25 ft, so you can stand in the doorway and let someone else discover it.
  • LED eyes over the glowTwo lit eyes sit on top of the glowing body, which is what sells it at the far end of a hallway.
  • USB charging includedThe gecko charges from the supplied cable; the remote runs on 2 AAA cells, bought separately.

On the bench

This is the version we reach for when someone says the house is too bright for a prank. Ten minutes under a desk lamp buys a long, slow glow — and the climb itself is identical to the standard crawler, so nothing was traded away for the finish.

Ten minutes under a lamp is the whole routine, and kids keep experimenting with how long one charge of light actually lasts. The gecko design underneath is unchanged: the same suction belly, the same rechargeable pack and the same slow crawling movement up a smooth wall.

The remote control is the same simple handset as the plain crawler, so friends can take a turn without a lesson first. Charging a glow-in-the-dark shell is not endless fun by itself — the move everybody waits for is the first climb with the lights off.

It sits on the wall crawlers shelf, in among the rest of the HEX BOTS robotic toys, so it went through the same yardstick as every other bot there before it got a card here.

Who plays with it, and what stands next to it

Customers buy the glowing version for the same reason we keep one: the play starts at bedtime instead of ending there. Lamp, ten minutes, lights off, and the crawling shape is the only thing in the room. The design turns an ordinary prank into a cool one, the experimenting never quite stops, and it makes a gift that does not need batteries explained first.

The plain green crawler on the same shelf climbs the same walls without the glow and costs less for it. Our guide to picking a crawler walks through which of the two suits your hallway.

Getting it, swapping it

Delivery, tracking, swaps and warranty claims are handled on the order page of the store you bought from — they hold the order, we hold the bench. Read how we split that in Doorstep & swaps.

The instructions in the box run to one sheet; our charge and care guide covers cells, run life and storage between runs. Surfaces and charging questions come to [email protected], Mon to Fri, 9am to 6pm ET.

Fun toy for all ages

Parents and kids love this. It works on even slightly textured walls. Was pretty simple for a four year old to operate. Seems very durable as it fell off the wall a couple of times. Works well but it moves very fast.

Very fun for five year old

I got this for my five year-old for his birthday and he loves it so much. It sticks to the wall it climbs very well and it runs around on the floor. He can operate it easily on his own and thinks it’s super cool. Highly recommend.

Good toy ... I hope it lasts

Fun toy. 5 year old daughter enjoys playing with it. Very different than typical remote car. ... Instructions come in so many lamguages they can be hard to follow. ... The toy has two modes: on the floor and on the wall. When using the wall crawler mode a fan turns on to allow it to "stick". It is noisier and understandably will drain the battery faster. ... After reading some of the negative reviews, I hope the toy will last. There are some thin strips that I assume help the fan's suction, but the wheels appear to cut into them (see picture). ... Fun toy, that's not too expensive. Just hope it lasts.
